Replacing a Door

Get it right the first time. Two common mistakes send doors back — wrong size, and wrong "hand" (which way it swings). Fifteen minutes with a tape measure and the tools below prevent both.

A door order needs four things: size, whether it's hollow or solid core, what hand it is, and what style / hardware finish you want. Work through the tools below in order — by the time you're done, you'll have every answer we need to build your quote.

  • Measure the door slab you have (or the rough opening in the wall).
  • Figure out the door's handing so it swings the right way.
  • Pick your style, hinge finish, and any glass.
  • Call us or Request a Quote — we'll confirm before we build.
Step 1

Figure out the size

Door sizes are written as 4-digit codes (3068 = 36" × 80"). If you have the old door, measure it. If you're framing new, measure the rough opening. The Size Guide decodes every combination we stock.

How to Measure a Door

How to Read a Door Size

Door sizes are written as a four-digit code. The first two digits are the width, the last two are the height — read as feet, then inches.

3068
30→ 3 ft 0 in →36 inches wide
68→ 6 ft 8 in →80 inches tall
Result: 3068 = 36" × 80"

This is the size of the door itself. Your rough opening will be larger — ask us and we'll give you the exact framing dimensions for your unit.

Step 2

Figure out the handing

Don't order the wrong door

Not sure which way your door swings?

1. Stand outside2. Hinges3. Swing4. Result

Step 1 — Stand outside the door

"Outside" means the side the door opens away from — the "secure" side.

  • ·For a front door, that's the yard.
  • ·For a bedroom or bathroom, that's the hallway.
  • ·For a closet, that's the room itself.

Face the door. The hinges will be visible on one side.

Step 3

Pick your style + hardware

Browse what we stock. If you're just doing the door, you only need the door page. If you're re-doing the frame or trim too, grab those categories as well.

When you call, tell us:

size (or measurements) · hollow or solid core · which hand · hinge finish · style · single or double

Not sure where to start?

Call us — we'd rather answer questions than build the wrong order.
